Santa Claus Village is the place on the Arctic Circle, eight kilometres north of Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, where Santa Claus receives visitors every day of the year. It is not a theme park with a gate: the village is an open cluster of log buildings around a square crossed by the painted Arctic Circle line, and walking in, meeting Santa in his office, posting a letter from Santa's own post office and stepping over the line all cost nothing. What costs money are the things around that core: the Snowman World snow park, the underground SantaPark, reindeer and husky rides, the ice-bar drinks and the photos with Santa. This guide separates the two, with the 2026–2027 opening hours and prices from the operators themselves.

What Santa Claus Village is and what it is not

The village grew up around Santa Claus Office, which has welcomed guests at the Arctic Circle for more than thirty years, and the oldest building on the site is the Roosevelt Cottage of 1950, built for Eleanor Roosevelt's visit to the Arctic Circle. Today it is run as a cooperative of roughly fifty companies: Santa's office and his Christmas House, the Main Post Office, Snowman World, the reindeer and husky yards, a dozen restaurants and cafés, design shops (Marimekko, Iittala, Pentik, Marttiini) and the hotels and glass igloos on the edge of the square. The whole site sits on the old German Luftwaffe airfield support area of the 1940s, which is why it is flat and why the airport is only three kilometres away.

Three things surprise first-time visitors. First, there is no entrance fee and no opening time for the village itself: you can drive in at midnight in July and stand on the Arctic Circle line alone. Second, Santa is really there every day, including summer, and meeting him is free. Third, the Arctic Circle line painted across the square marks the circle's position of 1865; the real line has drifted about 700 metres north, just south of the airport. Nobody minds.

Meeting Santa Claus

Santa sits in Santa Claus Office, the building with the clock tower next to the main square. You walk in, elves guide you along a short route and you have a minute or two alone with him. There is no booking and no charge; during the busy season the elves ask you not to use your own camera, and the photographer elf's pictures and video can be bought afterwards as a digital package or an A4 print. A second, quieter Santa receives visitors in the red Christmas House on the other side of the square, also free. The full visit, the Christmas Express Pass that skips the queue and what to say to Santa are on the meet Santa Claus page.

When to come: the four seasons of the village

The line, live

The Arctic Circle crosses the square in front of Santa's office: a painted stripe, a row of posts, a certificate for a few euros and the story of why the real circle has moved 700 metres north. The City of Rovaniemi streams the square around the clock; the live webcam shows the snow, the light and the queue before you decide what time to arrive.

Getting there in one paragraph

From Rovaniemi city centre take bus 8 (year-round, about 25 minutes) or, between November and March, the Santa's Express and Airport Express buses that link the centre, the village and the airport. A taxi from the centre is 10–15 minutes. From the airport the village is three kilometres: the Airport Express, a taxi or a five-minute drive. By rail, the Santa Claus Express night train from Helsinki arrives in Rovaniemi in the morning. By car, the village sits directly on the E75 (Finnish road 4) and parking is free. Timetables, prices and the night-train tips are on the how to get there page.

Where to sleep

You can stay inside the village, in the red cottages with private saunas of Santa Claus Holiday Village, in one of the 71 glass igloos of Santa's Igloos Arctic Circle, in the Glass Resort apartments or at the Nova Skyland hotel next to Santa's office; or ten minutes away at Apukka Resort; or in town, where hotels are cheaper and bus 8 does the rest. Who each suits, and what a glass igloo is really like in December, on the accommodation page.
