Facts checked for the 2026–2027 season against the operators' own pages (Santa Claus Village, Snowman World, SantaPark, VR, Finavia). Hours and prices change by season: the booking page has the final word.
You can sleep inside Santa Claus Village, within a few hundred metres of Santa's office, or in Rovaniemi city with a bus ride in the morning. The village option costs more and sells out first for Christmas, but it puts you on the Arctic Circle line at eight in the morning before the day-trippers arrive and under the aurora at night. Here is what each place is, who it suits and what a glass igloo really delivers in December.

Glass igloo, cottage or city hotel: an honest comparison
| Glass igloo | Cottage with sauna | City hotel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price in December | very high; often 400–700 € a night | high; 250–450 € | moderate; 120–250 € |
| Aurora from bed | yes, on a clear night; the village lights dim the sky a little | no, but the square is dark enough 200 m away | no; join a tour |
| Space | small, one room, often no kitchen | generous, kitchenette, terrace | standard room |
| Breakfast and dinner | restaurant on site | three restaurants, buffet breakfast rated «very good» | many options |
| Getting to Santa at 8:00 | on foot | on foot | bus 8 or taxi |
| Best for | one special night | families, 2–4 nights | budget, longer trips |
A common pattern that reviewers recommend: two or three nights in a cottage or in town, one night in a glass igloo on the clearest forecast night, booked with free cancellation if the operator allows it.
What a December night in a glass igloo is really like
The roof is heated glass, so snow slides off and the view stays clear; the bed faces north. You will see the aurora from it on perhaps one night in three in December, more often in March, and the village's own lights sit low enough on the horizon not to spoil it. The igloo is warm, small and quiet, with a bathroom and no kitchen; breakfast is in the restaurant across the snow. Expect to be woken by light at 9:00 and by other guests' boots at 8:00. For families the Glass Resort apartments and the Holiday Village's glass-igloo cottages give the same roof with a sofa, a sauna and room for four, at a price that is lower per person.
Booking: timing and what sells out
- Christmas week (20 December – 2 January) in the village is sold out by late summer most years; the first week of December and 7 – 20 January are the realistic alternatives.
- Glass igloos sell out before cottages; cottages before city hotels.
- Many village stays include an airport pick-up on request, and the Holiday Village staff arrange safaris, which saves a trip to the booking desks.
- February and March have the same snow, more daylight, better aurora odds and prices roughly a third lower than Christmas.
